A Custom Fountain Pen Case — A Craftsmanship Journey

My Experience Working With Michael Whitcraft of Noble Humidors

A few months back, I was at a favorite monthly dinner with a group of respected gentlemen. This entailed good friends and contemplative conversation … the kind of evening that always unfolds into a nourishing experience.

One of those friends is Mr. Michael Whitcraft, the founder of Noble Humidors. At some point, my eyes landed on a beautiful humidor sitting on the coffee table. It had a certain presence, with clean lines, impeccable joinery, the sort of craftsmanship that stops you mid-sentence. I made an offhand comment about how stunning it was, and that’s when Michael casually (and with humility) said, “Oh, thanks, I built it.”

That moment changed the trajectory of my analog interests, in a very unique way.

Seeing the Maker Behind the Craft

Over the next few weeks, I saw more of Michael’s work. I visited his woodworking space — an immaculate, professional setup with serious equipment, racks of premium hardwoods, and the kind of organization only a true craftsman maintains. It immediately became clear: this was someone who doesn’t just make things … he makes them well, and he cares deeply about the process.

Somewhere between admiring a walnut humidor and asking too many questions, I said, “Would you ever consider building a custom fountain pen case?”

He didn’t hesitate. “Absolutely,” he said. (and, enthusiastically, I might add)

And just like that, a months-long collaboration began.

Designing a Case From Scratch — Together

What followed was one of the most enjoyable creative experiences I’ve had in my analog journey. This wasn’t a simple commission; it was a true partnership.

I came to the project with ideas … probably too many! Specific compartments, a particular layout, a visual aesthetic leaning toward minimalism and warmth.

And rather than simply build what I asked for, Michael joined me in the creative space. He listened, expanded ideas, and came back with thoughtful, innovative design suggestions I never would have considered on my own.

Every detail became a conversation.
Every feature had a reason.
Every refinement moved the piece closer to something uniquely mine.

Premium Materials, Purposefully Chosen

One thing I especially admired throughout the process was Michael’s unwavering commitment to quality materials. He searched out truly exceptional woods — carefully matched for grain and tone — along with high-quality hardware and interior components.

Nothing was rushed.

Nothing was compromised.

This wasn’t “good enough.”

This was “this will last a lifetime.”

It’s the same philosophy he brings to his humidors, which I’ve now seen more of. They’re stunning, functional heirlooms built with reverence for both the craft and the people who will use them.

This same level of care went into my fountain pen case.

Constant Communication | And The Joy of Watching It Come to Life

One of the most unexpectedly enjoyable parts of the journey was how often Michael would send updates. Photos, videos, progress notes … like a behind-the-scenes documentary of my own analog accessory being born.

There were so many moments where an idea would spark mid-project:

“What if we add a soft-close mechanism?”
“Should we line this section differently?”
“Would a detail here add elegance?”

Each time, we’d talk it through, send sketches back and forth, and refine the design. It made the process dynamic, personal, and honestly … joyful!

Beyond Humidors: Custom Work for Fountain Pen Enthusiasts

Although his primary business at Noble Humidors revolves around crafting gorgeous cigar humidors, Michael has a clear passion for creating bespoke analog pieces. He proved not only that he can build custom fountain pen cases—large and small—but that he thrives doing it.

If you’re a fountain pen enthusiast, a collector, or simply someone who values craftsmanship, you won’t find a more collaborative, attentive builder.

What’s Next? A Custom Analog Stationery Kit

Now that I’m enjoying this pen case (which exceeded every expectations) I’m already thinking about the next project. We’ve begun talking about a custom analog stationery kit: a combination of tools, compartments, and analog essentials built into one cohesive piece.

That’s the magic of working with someone like Michael: one creation sparks the imagination for the next.

Final Thoughts: A Recommendation With Enthusiasm

In a world leaning toward disposability, people like Michael Whitcraft stand out. He builds objects meant to last, meant to be loved, meant to be used daily and eventually handed down. My custom fountain pen case isn’t just a storage solution; it’s a piece of art, born from collaboration and crafted with care.

If you’re looking for a custom pen case, a humidor, or any analog accessory built with integrity and imagination, I cannot recommend Michael and Noble Humidors highly enough.

This experience reminded me why the analog world matters:

It’s human, it’s tangible, and when done well … it stays with you.
